Miss Netherlands a Transgender

A Dutch model has become the first transgender woman ever to win the Miss Universe Netherlands pageant, but has unfortunately already been met with a wave of transphobic comments on Twitter.

The Miss Nederland competition announced Saturday that 22-year-old Rikkie Valerie Kollé beat previous Miss Netherlands Ona Moody and current Miss Universe, R’Bonney Gabriel from the United States.

Kolle is only the second transgender woman to compete in a Miss Universe pageant. in 2012, transgender candidates were admitted for the first time, followed by Angela Ponce of Spain in 2018.

After her victory was confirmed, Kolle wrote on Instagram, “I DID IT!!!!! It’s unreal but I get to call myself @missnederland 2023. It’s been an educational and beautiful journey, my year is unstoppable. I’m so proud and happy, I can’t even describe it. I made my community proud and showed that it can be done.”

“And yes, I’m trans, and I want to tell my story, but what matters to me is that I’m also Rikkie,” she continued. I completed this on my own and thoroughly enjoyed it.

“And wherever you are in the world, I want to be there for you and be the example that I myself missed as a little me,” she said after expressing gratitude to the judges, peers, friends, family, and fans. Let’s get @missuniverse set for lots more adventures. I’m really excited!”

Kolle will now compete in the worldwide Miss Universe Pageant, which will take place in El Salvador later this month.
