According to a statement from the PMO, which was cited by the media outlet CBC, Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire have entered into a legal separation agreement.

Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife of 18 years, Sophie Gregoire, announced their separation in an unexpected statement on Wednesday morning.
In this regard, the couple released related public statements, which they both shared on Instagram. They “would like to share the fact that following many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have decided to separate,” according to the statement.

They were married in May 2005 in Montreal and have three children: Hadrien, age 9, Ella-Grace, 14, and Xavier, 15.

They have signed a legal separation agreement, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office (PMO) cited by the media outlet CBC.

The various Instagram posts from them said, “As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build.

“We ask that you respect our and our children’s privacy,” it continued, “for the benefit of our children.”

The news was unexpected because there had been no reports or even rumors about a rift between the Trudeaus.

According to the PMO statement cited by CBC, “They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward.”

In February 2018, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau traveled to India with the Canadian prime minister, who was there for an 11-day business trip.

Trudeau, 51, allegedly met Sophie Gregoire, 48, a former entertainment journalist, in 2003, according to the publication Globe and Mail.

“Both parents will be a constant presence in their children’s lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week,” the PMO also said in its statement on the matter.
