A U.S. Attorney David Weiss who is conducting an investigation into Hunter Biden has been designated as a Special Counsel.

David Weiss, the federal prosecutor who has previously brought criminal charges in the case, has been granted an elevated status by Merrick Garland.

A recent plea deal involving tax and gun charges against the President’s son, Hunter Biden, recently fell apart.

Republican officials are urging for an investigation into Hunter Biden’s business activities.

In a surprising announcement at the Department of Justice on Friday, Merrick Garland disclosed that he was taking this step following a request from David Weiss earlier in the week.

This new designation will provide the prosecutor with additional resources to advance the investigation and potentially pursue charges that extend beyond Delaware’s jurisdiction.

Merrick Garland stated that the special counsel will compile a report upon completion of the investigation, and the Justice Department will aim to make a substantial portion of it available to the public.

“The appointment of Mr. Weiss underscores the department’s commitment to maintaining both independence and accountability, particularly in sensitive matters,” Merrick Garland conveyed during a press conference.

Hunter Biden’s attorney, Chris Clark, responded in a statement, expressing confidence that his client will ultimately reach a resolution and move forward with his life successfully.

Chris Clark highlighted that the investigation has been ongoing for a period of five years.

The charges against Hunter Biden involve two misdemeanor tax violations, alleging that he failed to pay income taxes in 2017 and 2018, during which he earned over $1.5 million. Additionally, he is facing a felony charge for allegedly possessing a firearm while under the influence of illegal drugs.

Initially, Hunter Biden had reached an agreement with prosecutors to plead guilty to the tax charges and acknowledge the firearm offense in order to avoid imprisonment. However, this deal was invalidated by US District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika due to unconventional terms and the unique nature of the proposed resolution for the firearm charge.

Since then, further negotiations between Hunter Biden and the prosecutors have taken place, but no consensus has been reached. The case is expected to proceed to trial.

Republicans are advocating for additional criminal charges to be brought against Hunter Biden and even the President. They claim that Hunter Biden has financially benefited from his son’s business involvements in Ukraine and China.

Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has hinted at the possibility of an impeachment inquiry against the President in the upcoming fall season.

The White House has dismissed these allegations as “baseless conspiracy theories” and rejected the notion that President Biden has been involved in his son’s business matters.

David Weiss has conducted a thorough investigation into this matter over the course of several years. So far, no evidence has emerged suggesting that Hunter Biden’s business activities have profited from his father’s presidential position.
